Merlion School was given the SPK school licensing in 2014. We are happy to announce that we attained the SPK licensing for all five schools- Nursery, Kindergarten, Primary, Secondary and Pre-University. What is SPK? SPK stands for Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama. In order to qualify to be an SPK school, a school must first attain the grade level “A” in the national accreditation and also be accredited by the respective foreign educational institution it is cooperating with, in our case, Cambridge Assessment International Education. SPK accredited schools should also include three compulsory local curriculum subjects in their curriculum to be offered to Indonesian students: Civics, Bahasa Indonesia and Religion, while foreign students must be offered Indonesian Studies. Furtheremore, Indonesian students of SPK schools are required to take the National Examinations in addition to the internationally-based examinations (Ujian Negara). This is in line with the Peraturan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (Permendikbud) no. 31 tahun 2014.

The IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for students aged 14 -16 and is recognised by leading universities worldwide. The Cambridge IGCSE offers a flexible and stimulating curriculum which develops skills in creative thinking, enquiry and problem solving and is the perfect preparation for advanced study including the Cambridge AS and A Level.

Entry to Merlion School’s IGCSE programme is available to Secondary 3 students in Semester 1, for the current year and Secondary 4 students in Semester 1, of the following year.

Students wishing to commence their studies in Secondary 3 will take part in an immersive Cambridge International programme for the semester that will place them in an advantageous position for completing their examinations in Secondary 4. Students are also able to commence the IGCSE program in Secondary 4. At the end of Secondary 4, students will sit for the IGCSE. Students from other schools are also welcome to take the IGCSE since Merlion School is a recognised examination centre in Surabaya. IGCSE is being offered in June and November.

CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL
AS & A Level (Years 11 & 12)

Thousands of learners use Cambridge International AS & A Level every year to gain places at leading universities worldwide. Students develop a deep understanding of subjects, as well as independent learning and constructive thinking skills – abilities which universities value highly. Entry to the AS & A Level programme at Merlion is available to Year 11 students. Students will complete their AS Level examinations in Year 11 and will go on to complete their A Level examinations in Year 12. Private candidates are also welcome to sit in the AS/A Level examinations in June and November.

Accredited “A” for Nursery and Kindergarten

Merlion School has an excellent Preschool, with a grade of ‘A’ in accreditation granted by the BADAN AKREDITASI NASIONAL PENDIDIKAN ANAK USIA DINI DAN PENDIDIKAN NON FORMAL (BAN PAUD dan PNF).

Merlion Preschool is one of the only five schools in Surabaya, Indonesia with the same accreditation status.

OUR HISTORY

2007

After auditing a school property at Jl H R Muhammad 371, Surabaya, the Yayasan Satya Vidya Indonesia adopted the name Merlion International School and opened its doors on 22 October 2007. Subsequently, it was renamed Merlion School. Singapore is well known as an educational hub in South East Asia. The ‘Merlion’ was adapted to brand the school. The mission of the school is to provide quality education and achieve academic excellence.

Teachers were trained, resources were brought in and a whole new culture was developed to excite students, motivate staff, and assure parents and stakeholders of the school’s commitment to excel in all areas of education.

The following are the pillars of the school:

  1. The Yayasan Satya Vidya Indonesia, whose mission is to establish a school that can provide good education service.
  2. A quality academic programme for children to pursue higher education of their choice and be ready of the fast changing world.
  3. A Life Skills programme through co-curricular activities, project work, Information Technology, participation in national and international activities and field trips.
  4. A moral character development programme for children to support the family, country and the world.

In 2017, Merlion School was assessed for accreditation by the Ministry of Education. The Preschool scored a grade of ‘A’ in all the criterion requirements of the assessment. The Primary and High Schools are in its final stages of assessment in 2018.

The school leaders are envisioned and they believe in entrepreneurship, quality and continuous training of their staff.
