PRE-SCHOOL

Merlion Preschool, an SPK school formerly known as Merlion International Preschool, offers quality early childhood education for children ages 12 months to 6 years old. Our two programmes, SEED and STAR, follow the 6 Learning Areas of the Singapore’s Nurturing Early Learner Framework (NEL), which lay a strong foundation for children to become lifelong learner and achieve learning goals in:

LANGUAGE AND LITERACY,
NUMERACY,
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT,
DISCOVERY OF THE WORLD,
MOTOR SKILLS DEVELOPMENT AND,
AESTHETICS AND CREATIVE EXPRESSIONS.

EVERY FAMILY IS SPECIAL AND EACH JOURNEY IS VERY MEANINGFUL

At Merlion Preschool, we see children as individuals and as part of a community. Every child comes from a family with a different set of cultural values and beliefs. Inspired by the sociocultural approach to cognitive learning developed by Lev Vygotsky, we believe that community plays a central role in the process of making meaning.

Hence, we take pride in building strong relationships with all the stakeholders of children's learning, particularly the families we work with;

ENGAGING AND INVOLVING THEM IN EVERY ASPECT OF THEIR CHILD'S LEARNING DEVELOPMENT.

The two programmes SEED and STAR are developed and offered with the intention of addressing different families’ educational principles and beliefs, yet upholding our mission of providing meaningful education for all children.

SEED

PROGRAMME

SEED Programme is inspired by the Reggio-Emilia philosophy and Inquiry-based Projects.

1

Provides time and opportunity for 4 Inquiry-based Projects encourage children children to explore both natural and intentional environments to promote inquiry, problem-solving, independence and socio-emotional intelligence.

2

Provides an environment that serves as a ‘third-teacher’, which helps to promote autonomous learning. Educators put thei intentions and goals in the environment for children to explore.

3

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, the SEED programme focuses on children as protagonists of learning, each demonstrating and communicating a Hundred Languages - a hundred ways of expressing, a hundred ways of exploring, a hundred ways of being.

4

Inquiry-based Projects encourage children to explore their interests and investigate questions, problems, concepts, or ideas relevant to the children, families, and the community These projects involve deep engagement and investigation which entail:

Authenticity. The inquiry study emanates from a question, problem, or exploration that has meaning to children.

Academic. Children explore concepts to build knowledge that leads to deep understanding. As children explore their environment and engage in dialogues with educators and peers, they develop habits of mind that encourage them to wonder and ask questions: causation, evidence (how do we know what we know?), viewpoint, patterns and connections etc.

Active exploration, dialogues and discussions. Concept mapping, brainstorming, sensory exploration, etc.

Connecting with more experienced adults (Experts) Technology
