SECONDARY
We strive to be a friendly school by celebrating the uniquenes of each individual, while at the same time fostering a sense of community and belonging.
We understand that you are proud of your child and that your hopes for their future are dear to you. That’s why we are excited to providea flexible-learning programme that can cater to your child’s individual needs. Our three main programmes, each supplemented with our unique brand of subjects, give you the opportunity to find the rightfit for your child’s character and aspirations.
First off, our SEAL Assessment programme will identify your child’s strengths and offer critical guidance inchoosing the right programme for their personal needs. You can choose from our three excellent programmes: Exam-Based, Strength-Based and Flexi-Learning. The Exam-Based Programme focuses on the Cambridge curriculum, preparing your child for IGCSE and AS & A levels. The Strength-Based programme allows your child to explore traditional subjects in a profoundly student-centered manner. The Flexi-Learning Programme affords you the freedom to choose the subjects that are important to your child and their future.
We reinforce all three of our main programmes with our own unique independently-formulated subjects. These subjects have been developed in collaboration with the Hyouman team, and establish Merlion as Surabaya’s premerie Design-Thinking school. They include: Hyouman Project, Mindful Me, Living Circle and The Quest. In this way, we aim to create dynamic and self-aware students who are capable of making a difference in society, and who at the same time are balanced in body, mind, and spirit and can make a positive impact on our planet.

CAMBRIDGE
INTERNATIONAL
EXAMINATION
Being an SPK school (previously known as International School), Merlion School is a Cambridge Centre, which means it has the official permission to administer Cambridge International Examinations. Our school has been registered as a Cambridge centre since 2011 and has conducted Cambridge exams every year since (with the option of the November Series or the June Series).
The Upper Secondary students who choose the Exam-Based Programme are prepared to take the Cambridge IGCSE exam in semester 2 of Secondary 4. Students are given the freedom to choose the subjects they will take. In addition, if students decide to take 7 subjects, they can also take the ICE certification.
THE PRE-UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ARE PREPARED TO SIT FOR THE CAMBRIDGE AS & A LEVEL EXAMS. STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE FROM A RANGE OF ASSESSMENT OPTIONS TO GAIN CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONALS & A LEVEL QUALIFICATIONS:
1
Take the Cambridge International AS Level only. The syllabus content is half of the Cambridge International A Level.
2
Take a ‘staged’ assessment route – take the Cambridge International AS Level in one examination series and complete the final Cambridge International A Level at a subsequent series. AS Level marks can be carried forward to a full A Level twice within a 13 month period.
3
Take all papers of the Cambridge International A Level course in the same examination session, usually at the end of the course.

BASKETBALL |
Patience is a virtue, as the saying goes, and basketball embodies this saying despite it being a physically active with a lot of fas movements. Aiming for the right shot, knowing when to pass, and mastering the ins and outs of the game all require a level of patience. Basketball demands a lot from players. Defeat is inevitable and for some, that loss is too much to bear. Through basketball, students can learn to maintain stability in both aspects. Emotional stability is not one of the life lessons you can pick up through lecture, making basketball a great activity to let our students learn through playing.

Circle Time
Circle Time is our daily morning routine before the start of class. It’s scheduled from 8.00 am to 08.30 am. Everyone is required to join. It starts with 10 minutes of meditation, which is followed by 20 minutes of other activities. We believe that morning meditation is one of the healthiest ways to start a day. It is a mood booster that can improve the focus and productivity of students and teachers alike, and lower the levels of stress and anxiety. The activities after meditation are varied from Monday to Friday and include: Today in History, Current events, What if?, Teacher’s sharing and Friday notes. Students are assigned to facilitate circle time on a schedule that is shared every month by the Head of Student Affairs.
House Points
We use a unique house-point system to support the cooperation of our students as well as to encourage them to participate in events and activities. Charts of the point system are explained during students’ orientation and are available in the circle time classroom. Students are grouped into Phoenix, Centaur, Griffin, Dragon, Pegasus or Sphynx at the beginning of the academic year or once they enroll. The house grouping is used in many school activities.
